Options for double reed students include: color guard, front ensemble, or a secondary instrument. Due to expense and potential maintenance hazards, DOUBLE REED INSTRUMENTS are not part of the marching band. All members of the McMillen band program are automatically a part of the marching band. The Golden Roar also participates in the annual Plano Christmas Parade. The band has earned Superior and Excellent marks in each of these contests since the school's opening. Each year in October, the marching band participates in the UIL Marching Band Contest and the Plano East Marching Invitational. The Golden Roar participates in various pep rallies and spirit events throughout the year and performs at each home football game and select basketball games. In 2015, the Plano East Wind Ensemble was awarded the Sudler Flag of Honor by the John Philip Sousa Foundation.The McMillen "Golden Roar" Marching Band is the largest and one of the most active spirit and competition groups on campus. All of the concert bands have earned numerous “Best In Class” awards at nationally adjudicated festivals in Texas and throughout the United States. The Wind Ensemble has earned the UIL Sweepstakes Award for Superior Ratings in Marching, Concert Performance and Sight Reading every year since the school opened in 1981. The concert bands are consistent winners of the UIL Sweepstakes Award for Superior Ratings in Concert Performance and Sight Reading. In 2012, the Plano East Marching Band was awarded the Sudler Shield by the John Philip Sousa Foundation which recognizes outstanding high school marching band for world class excellence.Īll of the concert bands participate in the University Scholastic League Concert and Sight Reading Contest along with invitational festivals throughout the United States. The marching band has also participated in marching festivals where it has received many caption awards and been named “Best In Class”. In 2017, the Plano East Band Program was awarded the Earl D. The Wind Ensemble has been recognized as a National Winner by the National Wind Band Honors competition sponsored by the Foundation for Music Education on numerous occasions. The Plano East Wind Ensemble has been selected as a Honor Band Finalist by the Texas Music Educators Association and a featured performing ensemble at the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic. The Plano East Band program has been honored by the American School Band Directors Association with the Dale C. It is the goal of the Plano East band program to provide a balanced and well-rounded music education curriculum for all students. In addition to band classes, there are multiple opportunities for participation in other individual and ensemble performances including All-Region/All-State, Solo & Ensemble, East Plano Chamber Winds and Brass, percussion ensemble and winter guard. Private lessons are available for any student during their band class and at other times throughout the school day for a fee. Each band is team-taught, with multiple directors assisting throughout each rehearsal. There are 4 concert bands, a jazz ensemble and percussion class (fall semester only) that meet during the school day. The Plano East Senior High Band is one the largest student organizations at Plano East Senior High.
